Januik Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009, Columbia Valley, WA
January is a time for new beginnings, new plans, and looking ahead. So, there’s no better time to look at your wine cellar! Whether you need to replenish those bottles that helped the recent holidays be merry and bright, or you are starting a new cellar in 2012, there are great wines to be found (and collected) for the future!
This month, Wagshal’s wine-of-the-month is Januik Winery’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. This Columbia Valley, Washington red is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec to produce a full-bodied red. This Cabernet Sauvignon is packed with cassis, blackberry liqueur, dark cocoa and warm vanilla notes in the nose. It lingers across the palate, imparting a long, polished finish that was developed in part from aging in new French oak barrels. Januik’s Cabernets have consistently been ranked 90+ points since the late 1990’s, with the 2008 vintage receiving 94 points and being ranked #18 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2011! We’re sure that the 2009 vintage will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps, making this a great time to grab a few bottles to cellar, and a few to enjoy today!
Suggested Pairings: Grilled espresso-rubbed Venison tenderloin. A hearty spice-rubbed hangar steak and portabella mushroom salad topped with crumbles of Rogue Creamery’s Smoky Blue Cheese. Decadent flourless chocolate torte topped with fresh raspberries and whipped cream!
