beer :: midwestern brewing heritage

When people think about the history of beer in the US, they often think of the great Midwestern brewing masters like Adlophus Busch, Eberhard Anheuser, Joseph Schlitz, and Frederick Miller. Today, the art of brewing beer is alive and well in the Great Lakes region as we celebrate with a selection of beers in different styles and bodies from craft brewers in Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.

Beers:

Great Lakes Brewing Co. Dortmunder Golden Lager (Cleveland, OH)

Bell’s Two Hearted Ale (Comstock, MI)

Founder’s Centennial IPA (Grand Rapids, MI)

Great Lakes Brewing Co. Eliot Ness Amber Ale (Cleveland, OH)

Goose Island Honker’s Ale English Style Bitter (Chicago, IL)

Bell’s Brewery Kalamazoo Stout (Comstock, MI)

Food Pairings:

Try these beers with the traditional German and Bavarian foods of the brewing forefathers … schnitzel, sauerkraut, and spaetzel, oh my! But really, the hop-induced bitterness of Founder’s Centennial IPA is perfect accompaniment with rich, veal-based schnitzel. Or, sip the refreshingly clean Dortmunder Golden Lager with your sweet and spicy grilled Italian sausage topped with sautéed peppers and onions!
